First teachers are terrorists. Then Haitian are hijackers.
Now this.
WASHINGTON — Fresh from a two-day weekend visit to Iraq, the Bush administration's top health-care official defended the $950 million that will be spent to help Iraq establish universal health care.
Congressional Democrats have criticized the administration for helping Iraq to establish universal health care without doing the same for U.S. citizens.
Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson said yesterday there are major differences between the two countries that defy simple comparisons.
[P6: Here comes the stupid part]
"Even if you don't have health insurance," said Thompson, who toured medical facilities in the Iraqi cities of Baghdad and Tikrit on Saturday and Sunday, "you are still taken care of in America. That certainly could be defined as universal coverage."
Everyone without health insurance, raise your hand if you think you're "taken care of in America."
I swear, sometimes I think the Bushistas measure carefully before speaking to insure their head is sticking just far enough out of their butts that their feet can fit neatly into their mouths.
I heard about this last night at a meeting of my local Democratic party. We got pretty raucous at that point.
Posted by Al-Muhajabah at March 4, 2004 03:58 PMEven this I would forgive--well, of course before the Last Judgement I will have forgiven--but what is infuriating is that health facilities in Iraq are in such a rotten state.
Fine. Give Iraqis universal health care while not supplying the same to Americans. I can understand the strategic need to do so. An occupation is first and foremost a public relations problem. What I do not accept is that the most idiotic waste and corruption is defended sanctimoniously, while the actual facilities required to deliver that care are even now looted shells without reliable electricity and running water.
No wonder Jefferson trembled.
Posted by James R MacLean at March 5, 2004 02:50 PMAnd yes, I share AM's & P6's preference for universal health care coverage. I'm just drawing a distinction between an honest difference of opinion between Republicans and myself (OT1H) and betrayal of the government's self-acknowledged principles and responsibilities (OTOH).
Posted by James R MacLean at March 5, 2004 02:53 PMthrough my job i have access to literally thousands of pages of research going back decades proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that Thompson's comment is a lie...but it is useless to present any of it in rebuttal, because not only do these people not really believe anything they themselves say, they don't care. they don't care about a goddamned thing except 'four more years'. even if it's four more years of tribulation for the rest of us.
well...if any of you want to see some of the thousands of pages of research on this issue, i could probably share them with you. it might just depress you though.
