“For some reason, the most vocal Christians among us never mention the beatitudes. But, often with tears in their eyes, they demand that the Ten Commandments be posted in public buildings. And of course that’s Moses, not Jesus. I haven’t heard one of them demand that the Sermon on the Mount, the beatitudes, be posted anywhere.”- Kurt Vonnegut
I could not resist posting this quote. What an incredible idea! I say we replace every publicly posted Ten Commandments with a copy of the Sermon on the Mount. Or better yet, take them all down and just live them instead.

In some ways it IS strange that certain "Christians" make such a big deal about the 10 commandments but not the Beatitudes - I suppose it's a lot easier to hate than it is to love - but I think there's also a practical political angle to this, which is the desire by the Christian Right to avoid being tarnished with the "anti-semite" label. That is why one sees so much emphasis being placed on "Judeo-Christian" (as opposed to plain old "Christian") values, and even fashionable talk about "Abrahamic" religions.

I don't think a political reason is high on folks' list for preferring the 10 Commandments. To be honest I think a big part is that 10-C is close to the beginning of the book. I honestly don't think most Christians get as far s Job, much less Matthew.
