I like the expandy-extended text as a design thing, but the main page would load a LOT quicker without it. Since you have to click something anyway to get it, should I drop the expandy-text?

It depends on how long the extended entries are. If they're relatively short, then it's probably OK to keep it, but if not, you may want to switch to normal extended entry links.
I'm cranking at least one kind of lengthy one per day. And I really don't have a sense of what a dial-up person is dealing with anymore…I've been on ADSL or cable modem for over three years now.
You may want to try compressing your pages, if you're not already
I don't think I'm compressing them. I'll have to check.
The other thing I realized is going back to just a link to the individual archive will give me a better idea of what folks are reading.
re:indiv. archives...
Yes, you may have a better idea of what people are reading, assuming that they enter and/or exit from the indiv. archive page or you have a site meter that will track each page visited. But even then people could read posts while they're on the front page & you'd never know. Unless you mean just putting headlines on the front page and a 'read more' link on every story. That'd likely be too much work for the reader... hmm...
No, I'm not crazy enough to just do headlines and links. I don't go back to sites like that.
The long stuff is generally my own commentary, so I'm interested in how wether or not its read. And I do have a couple of counters on the server (that show me to be hella more popular than Site Meter would indicate&hellip:and all those hits can't be just me checking for comments to respond to).
I'm talking about what I was doing toward the end of the Identity Blogging surge--write an intro in the entry field that lets you know what's in the extended text. I'll be handling my more lengthy and personally important pieces that way.
that method makes sense.
Yeah, the various hit counters vary pretty wildly. SiteMeter seems to have long periods (hours) where it's 'asleep'. I guess their servers get overloaded or something.
