The only slightly redeeming possibility is that the church was refering to "condoms" in some countries that use some sort of membrane that is porous enough to allow some HIV and sperm through. I remember, in my elementary sex ed classes, that they made a distinction between latex condoms and this other kind.
But lets face it; that's probably not was the vatican was referring to.
Glad I left that denomination. These are the folks who only recently apologized for what they did to Galileo centuries ago. Stone-age creeps.
It's just a shame that the good work the pope has done over the years speaking out strongly for world peace and human rights has to be negated by his fanatic adherence to church doctrine on sex and procreation. It brings to mind that line in "People Get Ready" by the Impressions about he "who would hurt all mankind just to save his own."
