This is disgusting

Hesiod is ranting about a Republican Team Leader-type scam

PHONY LETTERS FROM OUR SOLDIERS IN IRAQ?: This is one of the most disgusting thinsg I've seen in a while. I was tipped off about the appalling possibility that someone wrote a letter about how wonderful things are over Iraq, near Kirkuk, and signed several soldiers' names to the letter without them approving it, or their knowledge.

Turns out, it's true. And someone is sending the exact same letter to different newspapers across the country...only each letter is "signed" by a different soldier living in that paper's area of circulation. A blatant propaganda ploy. To see for yourself, do the following:

1) Do a google search for the phrase: "I have been serving in Iraq for over five months now"

I've checked. He's right.

Via Hesiod, a military public affairs officer sent form letters to newspapers across the United States on or about 9/11/03. Each of the identical letters was signed by a member of the 2nd/503rd Airborne, which is stationed near Kirkuk. The

A local paper, The Olympian, received two copies and published a story about it. I blogged it to The Clipboard. Google search is currently turning up 25 hits.

Hesiod has updated his post. Turns out it wasn't as nefarious as he thought -- they were real signatures on some, and some claim that they didn't sign it, although none of the ones asked wrote it. They said that they agreed with the letter.

True, and I noted that at Dean's place.

We also note the letters were sent to newspapers, several times without the knowledge of the soldiers.

It's been downgraded from disgusting to stupid, ineffective propaganda.
