All respect and no restraint

David Brooks is off today.

Paul Krugman took his place.

Tellingly, the Obama campaign has put far more energy into attacking Mrs. Clinton’s health care proposals than it has into promoting the idea of universal coverage.

Mrs. Bill campaign has put far more energy into attacking Mr. Obama’s health care proposals than it has into promoting the idea of universal coverage.

I'm assuming he's discounting simple pronouncements of support for the idea.

But how negative has the Clinton campaign been, really? Yes, it ran an ad that included Osama bin Laden in a montage of crisis images that also included the Great Depression and Hurricane Katrina. To listen to some pundits, you’d think that ad was practically the same as the famous G.O.P. ad accusing Max Cleland of being weak on national security.

It wasn’t. The attacks from the Clinton campaign have been badminton compared with the hardball Republicans will play this fall. If the relatively mild rough and tumble of the Democratic fight has been enough to knock Mr. Obama off his pedestal, what hope did he ever have of staying on it through the general election?

Obama made one error after it came down to he and her: he competed with her as an ally. He tried to win without damaging her. She has obviously shown no such scruples.

I said a while back (I'm not looking it up right now) that when she first went negative...she herself, not just her minions...he should have announced he was going negative for two weeks, just to prove he could. Then he should have rained flaming sewage on her for two weeks...and stop.

Winning without damaging the opponent will not be a factor with McCain. Especially since a significant fraction of Americans...yes, Mr. K, even white working class Americans...will be disgusted by a campaign that was even MORE negative than the Clintons'. And the folks that like it won't vote for Hillary either.

Mr. Krugman: 60% of American does not trust your girl. That means 60% of American will not vote for your girl.

You're an economist. Do the math.
