I like that for obvious reasons. Case in point:
I don’t know what other people do and don’t care – I know what works best for me. I’m going to get on the soapbox for a minute.
What I’m going to say is something I realize was not taught to African-Americans - just do whatever. Just realize you will most likely f*ck up the first go around but keep it moving and just correct mistakes after each try. See, I notice some cats act like they got to be so damn perfect and ish, walk around with their chest sticking out and not admit they screwed up – pride ish. Then when I got into the global arena of development, people were screwing up all the time but it was alright because we supported each other to get better next time. That contrast of “showing pride” versus “we can get better” taught me a lot and why I’m not on some pride ish.
That pride ish why so many of us ain’t getting much progressive because we afraid to say we failed or f*ck up. This ain’t the one-shot qualifications for the Olympics! Please, I love being a f*ck up at something because all I can do is learn and get better. As long as it doesn’t kill a brotha, all it will do is make me stronger and more experienced. Hating cats be talking straight crap about other brothas and sistas during their come up and don’t got a damn thing to say once a brotha or sista make it except “I knew him back in Chicago”, the same cats claiming they knew Kayne and R.Kelly before their come up.
The reason why I’m saying this is because I want African-Americans to reject all this crap about “Blacks need to take responsibility” stuff and just do us. If someone don’t like how we do us, f*ck them – who cares? We need to stop letting people shame us when mistakes are made or things ain’t going right. Black people don’t need to take responsibility, we just need to believe we can deal with any adversity out there and be real enough to admit mistakes, learn from the experience and get better. No apologies, no regrets, no fear. And f*ck anybody who got a problem with it.
Nothing wrong with screwing up as long as you learn how to manage mistakes and turn it around to make yourself better from the experience. So now you know why Ed Dunn still around in this technology game. And trust me, you will hear a lot of former co-workers tell you I’m a screw-up (not really, they just hating) or ain’t all that. Because when you innovating, being a screw-up, not doing ish right the first time is the natural way to doing software development and it is expected. All of us who are experts in the tech game know ain’t no such thing as “super geeks” or “tech experts” but people who know how to think it, do it, learn from mistakes, refine it and keep that cycle until it is manageable.

Take personal
Take personal responsibility? For what?!
Our drug use, child rearing, love of education, etc and so on are no better or worse than anyone else. And they're certainly fantastic considering the odds we're up against.
Personal responsibility indeed. How about mainstream America starts taking "personal responsibility" for its racism, then talk to me.
Personal responsibility.
But dude's right. Give it your best shot, and if at first you don't succeed, try, try again.
thanks for helping me to articulate
why this whole "personal responsibility" meme has always bugged me. when you or i decide on our own to take responsibility for our words and actions, that's one thing. when we call on people in charge to do so, we're only calling on them to do their job. but when authority figures call on, well, let's just say particular groups of people to "take more personal responsibility" - it seems always to carry the subtext, "you would be oh so much more happy and successful in life if only you knew your proper place". call me naive, i was shocked to read that mr. O. was going off on that stuff. it's so retro it's like 60's republicanism. next thing you know he's going to say something about the silent majority...
