Seriously though, McWhorter's popular linguistic books are wonderful, but that he's so deluded as to imagine there's some insight to be gleaned by"disproving" the jaw-droppingly obvious fact that mainstream musicians aren't actually a revolutionary vanguard puts the lie to his intellectual pretensions.

Hip Hop isn't owned or controlled by black people, therefore the content and agenda of Hip Hop is not designed to be beneficial to black people.

If it weren't for the fact that I was more interested in social linguistics than the nuts and bolts and other immuture excuses, I would've majored in linguistics. I haven't read any of McWhorters works in linguistics, but from what I've seen of him on C-Span, he's a linguistic savant.

And I say "savant" because when it comes to race, he's an idiot.

Is he getting paid? Because that was the most bizarre Stepin Fetchit I've seen in a while. He's a self-described "starchy" social conservative; for some reason I don't feel very moved to read his work.
