Former Detroit Deputy Police Chief Gary Brown alleged Tuesday that Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick fired him as the city's top anticorruption cop for investigating whether the mayor, his family and members of his staff were involved in criminal activity.
Brown's explosive charge that Kilpatrick and his inner circle may have held a raucous party at the Manoogian Mansion, covered up a drunken-driving accident and falsified time cards sent the mayor scrambling to defuse a crisis that could undermine his 16-month-old tenure.
