BIDDING OUT SCHOOLS . . .
Mon Apr 19, 3:33 AM ET

Everyone wants to run the schools - especially when money's involved.

Or, rather, especially because there is money involved - billions of dollars each and every year.

Thus, last week the usual suspects zeroed in on school contracts, particularly those not competitively bid.

City Comptroller Bill Thompson and Council Speaker Gifford Miller want more oversight of such contracts (preferably by them, no doubt).

(Oh, and by the way: Both may run for mayor next year.)

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver's education-committee henchman, Steve Sanders (who's still sore over the 2002 reform that let City Hall run the schools) also wants to handcuff top brass. Or at least shift some of its money-dispensing powers to . . . well, let's just say, others.

"There is very little accountability right now as it relates to millions, if not tens of millions of dollars," Sanders says.
