I could not resist posting this quote. What an incredible idea! I say we replace every publicly posted Ten Commandments with a copy of the Sermon on the Mount. Or better yet, take them all down and just live them instead.

In some ways it IS strange that certain "Christians" make such a big deal about the 10 commandments but not the Beatitudes - I suppose it's a lot easier to hate than it is to love - but I think there's also a practical political angle to this, which is the desire by the Christian Right to avoid being tarnished with the "anti-semite" label. That is why one sees so much emphasis being placed on "Judeo-Christian" (as opposed to plain old "Christian") values, and even fashionable talk about "Abrahamic" religions.

I don't think a political reason is high on folks' list for preferring the 10 Commandments. To be honest I think a big part is that 10-C is close to the beginning of the book. I honestly don't think most Christians get as far s Job, much less Matthew.
