Other effects of comment spam

It seems even failed attempts at comment spam cause issues; specifically, if you get enough fast enough our CPU usage goes through the roof.

Yes. Back in February, I had a crapflooding attempt on my site; posting nearly 700 spam comments. It nearly took down my site. Subsequently, there was a second attempt. Even though at that point I had deleted the mt-comments.cgi script, just handling the 404s caused some problems.

In case anybody is curious, I posted some tips for dealing with crapflooding (also here and here).

Of course, right now I've got the only guaranteed solution to comment spam: I don't have comments open on my blog. I keep looking back at all the frustration I had to deal with as things sunk into the mire every time I posted something about Islam, and I keep deciding I'm in no hurry to deal with that again. Maybe later.

Were all of the comments on the same timeline? Can you enforce a delay for such?
