The Prison-Industrial system affects you directly

I mentioned a little while ago that the Census counts prisoners as residents of the locality in which th eprison is located for purposes of laying out political districts and such. I thought I'd share my source for that information, and because the site is so good I'm going to cite it exactly as the owner requests.

Wagner, Peter. (2004) Prisoners of the Census. Available: http://www.prisonersofthecensus.org/, (Aug. 2004).

Like DAT, y'all.

Much good information, including summaries of how politics in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio ,Pennsylvania are impacted by the redistribution of the population…New York is linked because they have a particularly good (as in clear) explanation on my home state.

Now you know I could milk a week of intelligent, cogent posts by plagiarizing boy's work, right? But I got something else in mind.

From what I understand, a lot of the figures about employment and the economy are based on the non-institutionalized population. We get a lot of labor out of inmates, but don't seem to count them properly when looking at economic indicators.

That's part of what I'm considering. SInce prisoners are actually producing for the economy they should be taken into account when calculating the size of the labor pool, median and average incomes, etc.

I suspect economic figures would look drastically different if that were done.

"Drastically different" is right. Sounds like another scam from the "cheap labor conservatives" (which includes some members of the Democratic Party).
