Thugs need to be in jail.

The problem with this story is a discussed context where the thugs might only be guilty of misdemeanors. What kind of society do we have when people can forcefully enter an apartment, tear stuff up, terrorise the occupant, and there's some doubt if they're guilty of a felony?

Hard to tell. I'm sure they were against the war in Iraq, the Rice, Brown and Gonzalez appointments, and think that the Armstrong Williams thing was a big deal. On the other hand, they are probably against more gun control and taxes and are anti-abortion (for white people, at least.). It's really hard to tell.

I missed the misdemeanor part. When did assault with a deadly weapon and forced entry turn into misdemeanors? That's more than enough reason for someone to shoot you dead in Texas. If that is what charges they are looking at, society probably would have been better off if that is how it turned out.

In serious felony charges, prosecuting a case as a hate crime often doesn't make the sentence much more severe. But if the charge is a misdemeanor, prosecuting it as a hate crime bumps the charge up to felony status. In those cases, a conviction can result in significantly more jail time, said Pam Bondi, spokeswoman for State Attorney Mark Ober.

Right. I caught that part. Notice the "if" -- this is an explaination, but not relevant to this case. Assault w/deadly weapon is a felony everywhere that I am aware of (it's aggravated assault).

Ms. Colclough ought to buy a shotgun preferably one with a magazine underneath the barrel. She should probably move to another neighborhood but she should get a shotgun and learn how to use it.
