Blast Destroys Golden Dome of Sacred Shiite Shrine in Iraq
By EDWARD WONG

BAGHDAD, Iraq, Feb. 22 - Insurgents dressed as police commandos detonated powerful explosives this morning inside one of Shiite Islam's most sacred shrines, destroying most of the building, located in the volatile town of Samarra, and prompting thousands of Shiites to flood into streets across the country in protest.

The golden-domed shrine housed the tombs of two revered leaders of Shiite Islam and symbolized the place where the Imam Mahdi, a mythical, messianic figure, disappeared from this earth. Believers in the imam say he will return when the apocalypse is near, to cleanse the world of its evils.

The blast took place at about 7 a.m. and shook the city of Samarra, a Sunni-dominated area that is nevertheless sacred to Shiites. The gunmen entered the shrine and handcuffed guards in the building, then set about planting the explosives, an official of the provincial governorate said. There were no immediate reports of casualties, but the golden dome was entirely destroyed, as well as three-quarters of the structure.

Samarra has long been one of the most violent cities in Iraq, and American forces there have struggled to contain a virulent Sunni-led insurgency. The American military has tried various offensives, only to have insurgents regroup and carry out further strikes. The Americans have also had little success in propping up Iraqi security forces in the town.

Shiites protestors took to the streets shortly after the explosion. In Baghdad, militiamen loyal to radical cleric Moktada al-Sadr, who is a fervent believer in the prophecy of the Imam Mahdi, drove through the streets of Sadr City with Kalashnikovs, many accusing the Americans of carrying out the attack.

Personally, I've been shitting myself since I found out about this this morning.  Being a shi'i Muslim myself, I cannot even comprehend the sort of hatred that would be present for such actions to even happen like this.  Yes, we're used to some level of violence or hostility against our community every year, especially during this time around Ashura, such as the harassment of the shi'i ashura procession in New York two weeks ago, to the annual killings that take place in Pakistan, Iraq, and Afghanistan against mourners, etc.  But this just goes beyond comprehension.  This isn't even comparable to a church burning, this would be like setting fire to MLK's grave or bombing the Vatican, or bulldozing the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, or BOMBING the Buddhas in Bamiya (an act done by ppl with a similar ideaology).  Stuff like this hasn't happened since the mid 1800s when the Wahhabis tried to enter Karbala and destroy Imam Hussain's shrine, or when they actually did suceeed in destroying the first Muslim graveyard in Medina (also known as Janatul Baqi).

I am astounded, and pissed like shit.  This isn't a civil war thing, this strikes at the heart at the millions of shi'i Muslims all over the world.   I'm so sick to my stomach, it isn't even funny

Insurgents?

Anybody up for a round of "what if"?

What if this is a classic SAS style, false-flag counter-insurgency operation intended to ignite not only outright civil war in Iraq, but also to perturb intranecine muslim faultlines world-wide?

What's the bumper sticker slogan du jour, "nuke that ass, I want cheap gas!"

Hillbilly that is. Set a spell. Take your shoes off. Y'all come back now, y'hear?

Imagine the exurburant war-profiteering opportunities as 130 million descend into religious decimation. Can you hear the elites laughing as the pending mega-deaths mean more oil for further elite power consolidation and less for us?

Global societal force vectors are operating using the realpolitik theory of 'energy deletion': create wars to keep as much oil and gas in the ground as possible; a purposeful energy cliff. The elite can always afford their lavish lifestyles, the suffering of the proles is simply not their problem, in fact, it is their intentional program.

I hate being that paranoid, but it did occur to me.

Rush Limbaugh's pre-emptive experimental coverstory is that it was an Al Qaeda false flag operation intended to foment civil war and hasten the withdrawal of American troops.  Now, the elegant aspect of this approach is that the troops will withdraw to the oil producing Iraqi states and have a singular focus on protecting the black gold and ensuring its availability to the Great Guzzlers hereabouts.

If this ruse works, then the withdrawal will be spun not as a defeat of the American armed forces, but as a failure of democracy in Iraq due to ethnic/religious backwardness.   Sometimes you have to give it to the Bushies for the sheer audacity of the big lies they've told.

It makes absolutely no sense for Sunnis to bomb Shia mosques; this would be akin to Baptists bombing Catholic churches. Sectarian violence, dividing Iraqi society, does not serve Iraqis, either Sunni or Shia. It does, however, serve the occupation forces and also begins to realize the plan sketched out in Oded Yinon’s “A Strategy for Israel in the Nineteen Eighties” (the balkanization of Arab and Muslim society and culture), an objective shared by Jabotinsky Likudites and Straussian neocons.
