Afif Safieh, the PLO Ambassador to the USofA (and a Christian) just made a very good point...that the first fundamentalist government in the Middle East was Jewish (Israel). The next was Christian (Lebanon). Only after that did fundamentalism affect the Islamic nations in the Middle East.
