Bonds Hits Home Run No. 715 to Surpass Ruth
By JOE LAPOINTE
SAN FRANCISCO, May 28 — George Herman Ruth still leads Barry Lamar Bonds in catchy nicknames. Ruth was the "Babe" or "The Bambino" or "The Sultan of Swat," a legend of Yankees' lore. Bonds is still just Barry, the veteran slugger of the San Francisco Giants.
But Bonds is ahead of Ruth in a more important category — career home runs. In the bright sunshine alongside San Francisco Bay on Sunday afternoon, Bonds took a left-handed swing and eclipsed Ruth by hitting a baseball over the center field fence for the 715th home run of his 21-year major-league career.
Bonds now trails only Hank Aaron's 755 for first place. His 715th homer came on a 3-2 fastball in the bottom of the fourth inning from right-handed pitcher Byung-Hyum Kim of the Colorado Rockies before a near-capacity crowed at AT&T Park.
